THE LAPIDARY HOBBY

Scottish agate (photo, Alec McCreadie)Scottish agate (photo, Alec McCreadie)The lapidary or lapidarist cuts, shapes and polishes rocks and minerals to bring out their beauty, and perhaps sets them in jewellery. My husband and I have been members of The Scottish Mineral & Lapidary Club for many years. Club members hunt for local agates and also use rough material from all over the world. Agates and other hard stones are cut and polished as specimens or set in silver jewellery. Gemstones such as amethyst and aquamarine can be faceted into beautiful sparklers if, like Murdo, one has the skill and patience. These Scottish agates were found and polished by members of our Club.

Club members display their work at the Annual "At Home", 2000-2005
